Dear Neighbors,
In a perfect world, nothing bad would ever happen; there would be no need for emergency services. The real
world, however, is not a perfect world. Bad things happen to good people. For those situations, we need
emergency services to answer your calls for help.
The Ashburn Volunteer Fire Department was started more than sixty years ago after a fire claimed the lives of three
young children in a neighboring town. A group of local citizens formed the department to prevent another
tragedy.  These were not professional firefighters, but farmers, merchants and laborers. They held a
turkey shoot to help raise funds for a fire truck. Through fundraising and donations, they were able to
purchase land and build a fire station. The station they built is part of the current fire station on Ashburn Road.
They did what needed to be done.
That fire department grew as the community around it grew. Eventually, rescue services were added. Our
community is still growing. And because of that, the Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department also needs
to grow. To do that, we need the financial support of the community.
The fire-rescue service in Loudoun County is a combination system. That means the County provides and pays for
some services, including daytime staffing in many larger communities where the call volumes are high, and the training
center in Leesburg. However, the majority of the fire rescue service is still provided by individual and independent
volunteer fire rescue departments like Ashburn.
Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department responds to calls from Station 6 in Ashburn and Station 22 in Lansdowne. We
are your local fire-rescue department. We need to pay for utilities, building maintenance and insurance. We
have to buy the fire trucks, ambulances, tools, protective fire fighting gear, medical supplies and fuel needed to respond to
your calls. We need your support and your donations so that we can be there when you need us, in case something bad
happens to you, your family, your neighbors or your friends.
The volunteers of Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue are still doing what needs to be done. We’re ready to respond
when you need us. Please do your part and donate. We thank you for helping us help you. We are
a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Therefore, your contributions are tax deductible.
Thank you, again,
Carl Cowan
